PhD opportunities

The NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence on Meaningful Outcomes in Substance Use Treatment (MO CRE) based within the School of Psychology and the Centre for the Business and Economics of Health at The University of Queensland, is looking to fund a select few PhD candidates who are motivated to make a meaningful contribution to improving the delivery of evidence-based and cost-effective care within the alcohol and other drugs (AOD) sector.

The PhD projects will contribute to the MO CRE’s aims to reduce the cost and burden of primary and comorbid AOD problems in Australia, through the implementation of routine outcome measures and provision of feedback to clients accessing AOD services. The scholarships will provide the opportunity to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team of leading national and international researchers, clinicians and industry and policy partners, as well as people with lived AOD experience.

PhD topics

The PhD topics are flexible and will be determined in consultation with the scholarship recipients, however, potential projects could include:

  • Identifying, implementing, and evaluating a standard set of routine outcome measures to assess, monitor and provide individual feedback on treatment progress for clients accessing AOD services.
  • Examining the efficacy and cost effectiveness of varying AOD service types and settings for different AOD presentations, including those with polydrug use and comorbid mental health problems.
  • Determining client and staff preferences for increasing the uptake of routine outcome measures and feedback in drug and alcohol services.

Qualifications

Desirable qualifications include an Honours or Masters degree in psychology, public health, economics, econometrics or another related discipline, and/or an undergraduate degree in psychology, public health, economics or business, with relevant post-graduate qualifications in a health- or business-related discipline.

Tax-free top-up scholarships may be available to exceptional applicants. More information on the Meaningful outcomes: Centre of Research Excellence in substance use treatment scholarship project is available on the UQ Study website.
