Grant writing panel

Overview

Led by a panel of our very own MO CRE chief investigators, Professors Leanne Hides, Peter Kelly, and Amanda Baker, this session serves to demystify grant writing for PhD students and early career researchers. The session covers everything from fundamentals (e.g., the different funding bodies and grant types, how to develop an idea for a research grant application), to how to maintain motivation and productivity while waiting for funding application results.

Bio

Professor Leanne Hides

Professor Leanne Hides is the Director of the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence on Meaningful Outcomes in Substance Use Treatment and the Deputy Director of the National Centre for Youth Substance Use Research (NCYSUR). Professor Hides is a clinical psychologist with over 25 years of experience working on the interface of alcohol and other drug (AOD) clinical research and practice. Her translational research program co-designs, trials and implements innovative AOD treatments into clinical practice. Her research has been supported by $46m in grants ($37 nationally competitive) including 15 NHMRC ($14.5m; 3 as CIA including a Centre for Research Excellence), 3 MRFF ($7m) and 2 ARC ($1m) grants.

Professor Peter Kelly

A/Prof Kelly is an Associate Professor based in the School of Psychology, University of Wollongong. He is the Deputy Head of School (Research) and the Director of the Centre for Health Psychology Practice and Research (CHPPR). He is a registered Clinical Psychologist and has been awarded membership of the Australian Psychological Society (APS) College of Clinical Psychologists. He has extensive clinical and research experience working with individuals attending mental health and alcohol and other drug treatment services. A/Prof Kelly holds a number of research grants and consultancies supporting this work (e.g. NHMRC, ARC, NCCRED, NSW Health). 

Professor Amanda Baker

Professor Amanda Baker is an Adjunct Professor at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, University of New South Wales. She has worked as a NHMRC Senior Research Fellow and Professor in the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Newcastle, and as a clinical psychologist in mental health, substance abuse and forensic treatment settings in Australia and the UK. Her research focuses on comorbidity treatment.
